COMMON QUESTIONS

Allergy & Asthma Condition FAQs

Answers to common questions about seeing an allergist, the conditions we treat, and what to expect at Allergy & Asthma of Queens in Forest Hills.

Not sure which condition fits your symptoms?

You don’t need a diagnosis to schedule. Tell us what you’re experiencing, and Dr. Katayeva will help sort out the cause and the right next step.

What does an allergist-immunologist treat?

An allergist-immunologist diagnoses and treats allergies, asthma, and immune system conditions, including seasonal and food allergies, chronic cough, sinusitis, hives, eczema, medication allergies, and recurrent infections.

Do you treat both children and adults?

Yes. We care for patients of all ages, from infants with eczema or food allergies to adults with asthma, chronic hives, or medication allergies.

Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?

Many patients can schedule directly. Some insurance plans require a referral, so please call our office and we can help you confirm what your plan needs.

How do I know if my symptoms are allergies or something else?

Allergies, infections, and other conditions can look alike. A detailed history, exam, and targeted testing help us determine whether allergies are the cause.

Can you develop allergies as an adult?

Yes. Allergies and asthma can start at any age, including food allergies such as shellfish and environmental allergies after a move or a new pet.

What happens at my first visit?

Dr. Katayeva reviews your symptoms and history, performs an exam, and may recommend testing. You’ll leave with a clear explanation and a personalized plan.

When should I seek emergency care?

Call 911 for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, fainting, or a severe allergic reaction. Use epinephrine first if it has been prescribed for you.
